INFORMED CONSENT ISSUES
Whenever a patient considers having a surgical procedure, he or she is entitled, by law, to receive accurate and adequate information regarding the procedure and the associated medical risks. These issues include, but are not limited to:
- why a given procedure is necessary or selected over others;
- a description of the procedure to the patient's level of understanding;
- the associated risks and possible medical complications;
- anticipated recovery time;
- follow-up care ; and
- emergency care and phone numbers to call in case of an emergency.
